The Horror of Dolores Roach is Laughing With Us

The Horror of Dolores Roach is Laughing With Us

Doesn’t it seem like cannibalism is having a moment? The ultimate taboo is powering productions as varied as “Yellowjackets,” “Dahmer,” and “Bones and All,” and now it's taking over Prime Video through “The Horror of Dolores Roach.” Fear of people eating people is both current and ancient.

"Dolores Roach" was published about ten years ago. This is how long creator Aaron Mark has been refining this story, first as a play, then as a podcast, and now as an eight-part series starring Justina Machado as the title character and Alejandro Hernandez as Luis Batista, her unlikely benefactor.

As we move into the Washington Heights of today, a gentrified Latino neighborhood with only a few local businesses left, the TV version starts off slowly, focusing on character development and building a sense of place. The drug dealers have even changed, but they're still there, mostly serving white professionals.

As a result, Dolores becomes desperate for anything familiar when she returns to her old neighborhood after serving 16 years in prison for possession with intent to distribute (and assaulting an officer). As the inheritor of his father's empanada shop, Luis offers her a place to stay and creepy but useful devotion.

In the beginning, Dolores tries to do right, which explains the slow plot. Because of all the build-up, her first murder has meaning. Her next murder will mean something. From the start, we know she's going to become an infamous serial killer. While nothing in the early chapters makes that seem impossible, those first few episodes demonstrate her humanity. We see her other options and how difficult they would have been.

As Dolores ramps up her body count, the show really takes off. The show gets crazier and crazier as it gets more extreme. For instance, the audience is spared the nasty details of how Luis disposes of her victims in the first half of the season. It’s about as gross as you can imagine, if not even worse. And when the answer is revealed viscerally.

She snaps necks, picks fights, and burns the whole thing down as things spiral out of her control, making the climax feel all the more earned. This role is well suited to Machado, who switches between being a willfully ignorant girlfriend and being a violence-addicted mistress.

While “The Horror of Dolores Roach” is certainly dark—it spends a fair amount of time in a basement after all—it’s also funny with Machado displaying her characteristic physical humor. A simmering nervous energy ready to boil over is assisted by Hernandez.

In addition to Jean Yoon, who plays the delightfully annoying neighbor Joy, Judy Reyes, who runs the block and needsles Dolores as Marcie, and Ilan Eskenazi as the clueless nepo-baby landlord Jonah, Kita Updike portrays Nellie as the embodiment of GenZ mannerisms, realities, and frustrations.

But the best part of the show is wondering how far these characters will go, seeing them push past all common sense and decency. Dolores and Luis are bundles of contradictions, making them funny, humorous, and dangerous. They’re like someone you know until you don’t. The sense that they are on an edge, about to tip into mad cannibalism, is quite provocative.

As the series puts normality and extreme in conversation, it asks the audience to root for and against the characters. Despite being about a serial killer, "The Horror of Dolores Roach" doesn't take itself too seriously to get its frights.

Highlights of the American Black Film Festival

Highlights of the American Black Film Festival

The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) captures the energy and dynamism of Black creators, making its 27th year especially meaningful. The presented films, TV shows, shorts and documentaries shed light on the contemporary Black experience. Attended by a worldwide audience, it helps to promote international understanding of the diaspora. Its founders Jeff and Nicole Friday are present amongst panelists and celebrated directors in the industry. Altogether, it’s revolutionary.

Over the course of its five-day duration, the festival showcased a wide variety of screenings, panels, receptions, and parties. The festival's commitment to providing a comprehensive experience was evident, with festivalgoers eager to take part in every moment. As a result of the diverse range of programs, participants had ample opportunities to engage in meaningful discussions and explore different aspects of Black cinema.

Friday

Amongst the noteworthy productions available for viewing was "The Perfect Find," a romantic comedy helmed by Numa Perrier and featuring Gabrielle Union, Keith Powers, and Gina Torres. I had the opportunity to interview Union during the premiere and she expressed astonishment at the liberty of expressing a range of emotions with her roles in romantic films: humor, drama, and vulnerability. The pair of producers, Elaine Oliver and Tommy Oliver (who are also husband and wife), were asked what it is like collaborating on a romance film together. Kisses exchanged followed Elaine's saying that it had been an adventure since they met in 2013. She concluded that releasing "The Perfect Find" felt as if giving birth to their child, something viewers can experience when the movie comes out June 23rd on Netflix - an event I highly recommend you don't miss this summer!

The audience of "That's Our Business: A Conversation with Tabitha and Chance Brown" was transfixed by the scene of Black beauty that had gathered. Tabitha's career as an actor has experienced a surge during the pandemic thanks to her social media presence. The video blog she runs with her husband, "Fridays with Tab and Chance," connected with viewers across all corners of the web, eventually leading to its development into an official podcast. It's easy to see why their honest words, affection for one another, and steadfast support towards each other within the Hollywood industry stirred such admiration in everyone who witnessed it.

Sunday

On the final day of the festival, which also coincided with Father’s Day and Juneteenth weekend, Jeff Friday expressed pride in being a father and raising his children as his number one priority. Reflecting on the festival's success for over a quarter of a century, he noted its remarkable ability to champion people of color and advance their careers.

For the festival's final day, known as "Community Day," Issa Rae, Matthew Cherry ("Hair Love"), Syreeta Singleton ("Rap Sh!t") and Mark Davis ("Young Love") all made appearances. Through this powerful lineup of guests, the event demonstrated to attendees what a strong community looks like; specifically, Issa is featured in Chicago native Matthew Cherry's "Hair Love," which portrays the importance of Black hair care, and their ongoing partnership serves as an example of communal growth. During his remarks to the crowd, Matthew spoke about animation's crucial role in introducing kids to media: “Animation is one of the first mediums that children experience. Anything you can do in media that speaks to youth is an incredible power and opportunity," he said.

Mark and Matthew welcomed communal expression through their discussion of animation and urged Black people, particularly Black women, to get involved in the field of animation. They also provided their contact information.

The experience of attending ABFF was out of this world, as if I had been taken to a Black Heaven in beautiful Miami. The workshops, such as "Where Black is Infinite: Welcome Home" organized by Andscape, created a space for the community of people of color to feel appreciated and encouraged. It was a privilege to escape the rain and be present in this rare gathering that we all found so special. Participating in ABFF felt like a dream come true, however; I truly wish for it to stay on the international stage while also preserving its intimate vibe that makes it so coveted by us.

Rain lashes parts of Punjab for a second day, killing 17 and injuring 49

Rain lashes parts of Punjab for a second day, killing 17 and injuring 49

Several roof and wall collapses occurred across Punjab on Thursday as rain continued to batter parts of the province for a second consecutive day, causing at least 17 deaths and 49 injuries

According to a statement released by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), four people, including three children, were killed in Lahore when the roof of a house near the Bandianwala bridge collapsed due to heavy rain in the city's Amar Sidhu area.

A wall of the Government Mozang Teaching Hospital, adjoining a neighbouring building, collapsed, injuring 14 people. They were taken to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

In Gujranwala, six people were killed when a "weak wooden structure" collapsed inside a three-storey house. In similar incidents, three people died in Chakwal and Sheikhupura while one person died in Jhang.

In multiple rain-related incidents, 32 people were severely injured across the province, the report said. “They are being moved to the hospital and receiving medical aid.” The PDMA said it was monitoring the situation from its provincial control room and in contact with the administration.

Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) Monsoon Control Room in Lahore recorded 65 millimeters of rainfall in Nishtar Town director office, followed by 57 millimeters in Johar Town SDO office and 38 millimeters in Lakshmi Chowk. 3.5 millimeters of rainfall were recorded at Upper Mall, 5 millimeters at Mughalpura SDO, and 5.5 millimeters at the airport area.

Despite the fact that everything was under control today, Punjab caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi told reporters in Lahore that eight secretaries monitored one whole Wasa zone each. He said some ministers were assigned divisions to monitor, while others went to divisional headquarters.

A flood alert has been issued for the province, and the chief secretary chaired a meeting in the morning regarding this. The whole administration is working on it."

There were nine deaths across Punjab on Wednesday, due to electrocution, roof collapses, drownings, and lightning. CM Naqvi called the 291 millimetres of rainfall in Lahore a "record".

In the same vein, Lahore Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa pointed out that such a large amount of rain had not been observed in such a short period of time in over 30 years. As a Met Office official, who did not wish to be named, disputed Wasa's "record-breaking" claim, calling it "self-serving" since the agency had been given more time and resources to clear the city of water.

Drainage work is reviewed by Wasa MD

Wasa Managing Director Ghufran Ahmed reviewed drainage operations at several Lahore underpasses, including the Captain Mubeen Shaheed Underpass, as well as the provincial capital's roads earlier today. According to him, all disposal stations are operating at full capacity and fuel supply is being assured for all generators draining floodwater.

According to the Punjab Chief Secretary's office, Zahid Akhtar Zaman was "present on the field to review water drainage preparations".

Zaman visited "various roads and the Kalma Chowk underpass", and he directed all officers to remain on the field as well. The chief secretary also directed department secretaries to assess underpasses and disposal stations.

The statement quoted Zaman as saying that special measures should be taken to keep traffic flowing, and that more pumps should be installed to drain water from low-lying areas.

Floods, flash floods, and landslides are predicted in urban areas

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a weather forecast this morning: “Heavy rain may cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sahiwal, Toba Tek Singh, Multan, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Okara, Kohat, Peshawar, Bannu, Karak and Dera Ismail Khan [...] from July 6-8.”

A weather warning issued by PMD's Regional Meteorological Centre for Lahore says, "There is a risk of land sliding and flash flooding in vulnerable areas of Punjab and Kashmir due to heavy rainfall."

During July 5-9, there is also a risk of urban flooding in Punjab's major cities (Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Lahore, Faisalabad, Jhang, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan).

The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority also issued a flood alert yesterday warning of a "very high to exceptionally high flood situation from July 8 to 10".

According to a PMD alert, "widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over the upper catchments of rivers Sutlej, Ravi, Chenab, and up to some extent, River Jhelum."

"These meteorological conditions will cause very high to exceptionally high level flooding in River Chenab," it warned, noting that the "flood situation in rivers Ravi and Sutlej will be determined by the release of Indian water".

Further, it predicted that "high to very high-level floods are expected in the nullas of River Ravi and Chenab" and urged citizens to take precautionary measures to avoid any untoward developments.

US actor Allison Mack released early from prison after joining Nxivm cult

US actor Allison Mack released early from prison after joining Nxivm cult

She served two years in prison for her role in a sex-trafficking case tied to a cult

Mack, best known for her role in the television show Smallville, pleaded guilty to racketeering and conspiracy charges in April 2019 and was sentenced to three years in prison.

Nxivm, pronounced "nexium", was founded in 1998 as a self-help program. The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed her release on Monday. According to the organization, more than 16,000 people have been helped, including the son of the former Mexican president and Hollywood actress Mack.

Although Keith Raniere, 62, was at the top of this structure and the only man, Mack served as one of his top female deputies.

As a condition of joining the group, which was based in Albany, New York, female recruits were allegedly branded with his initials and expected to have sex with him.

Mack, who was arrested in 2018, was facing up to 17 years in prison, but her sentence was reduced after she helped prosecutors prove Raniere's guilt.

In 2020, he was sentenced to 120 years in prison for multiple crimes, including forcing women to become his sexual "slaves". She apologized to those who were harmed by her actions before her sentencing, calling her involvement with the group the "biggest mistake and regret of my life".
I am sorry for exposing you to the nefarious and emotionally abusive schemes of a twisted man," she said.

Here's how many calories Joey Chestnut consumed during his hot dog eating contest.

Here's how many calories Joey Chestnut consumed during his hot dog eating contest

Fourth of July means competitive hot dog eating - and lots of calories.

The men's portion of Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest was delayed Tuesday due to stormy weather, but Joey Chestnut maintained his title by eating 62 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes.
Joey Chestnut won his 15th title by devouring 63 hot dogs and buns last year. In 2021, he became the hot dog eating world champion by devouring 76 hot dogs and buns.

Eight-time champion Miki Sudo holds the women's record with 48.5 hot dogs and buns. This year, Sudo took first place with 39.5 dogs and buns.

The latest weiner winner's nutrition breakdown is below.

Joey Chestnut consumes how many calories?

One Nathan's Original Coney Island natural casing beef frank contains 170 calories (according to the company's website; other varieties vary) and one Nathan's restaurant style bun contains 130 calories.

Chestnut consumed 18,600 calories from 62 hot dogs and buns this year, or 10,540 calories from the dogs and 8,060 calories from the buns.

With 76 hot dogs and buns, he would have reached a whopping 22,800 calories!
Nathan's natural casing beef franks also contain 16 grams of total fat and 480 milligrams of sodium, so one hot dog accounts for about 21% of your daily recommended values.

Chestnut ate 62 franks this year, resulting in 992 grams of fat and 29,760 milligrams of sodium.

Sodium-rich diets are associated with an increased risk of high blood pressure, a major cause of stroke and heart attack.
Experts explain the health effects of competitive eating on your stomach.

Why do competitive eaters consume so much food?

Normal eaters feel full after consuming about a liter or a liter and a half of food, but competitive eaters stretch and relax their stomachs to fit in more.

In order to achieve this, they consume large quantities of low-calorie foods and liquids, including water, diet soda, watermelon, and cabbage. As with any competition, there will be losers, and all competitive eaters will reach their limit — and they might not feel too good afterwards. The stretching, however, does not continue indefinitely.

The side effects of such enormous binges vary based on the individual and the food being eaten, but, as CBS News previously reported, competitive eating can include nausea, gas, vomiting, heartburn, and diarrhea. Choking, inflammation of the esophagus, and even stomach rupture could be more serious side effects.

Major League Eating, the organization that oversees professional eating contests — including Nathan's Famous Hot Dot Eating Contest — said Monday that all of its events adhere to strict safety protocols, including having an emergency medical technician present and ensuring all participants are at least 18 years of age.

Amy Kraft contributed reporting to this article, which has been updated to correct the amount of sodium in that hot dog variety.

These are the people eligible for this week's one-time 'grocery rebate' payment from the Liberals

These are the people eligible for this week's one-time 'grocery rebate' payment from the Liberals

What is the rebate amount? Are you eligible?

This week, eligible Canadians will get some relief from high grocery bills through the federal government's "grocery rebate."

Over 11 million low- and modest-income Canadians and families will benefit from this one-time rebate, which is intended to offset the rising cost of food at grocery stores.

Canada Revenue Agency said eligible Canadians will receive grocery rebate payments on July 5, in line with already-scheduled quarterly GST rebates.

Who is eligible for the rebate?

Like the GST tax credit, eligibility is based on household income and family size.

Individuals and families earning $32,000 or less are eligible for the rebate.

How do I get the rebate?

You don't have to apply separately for the rebate. It will be issued automatically.

Due to the rebate calculation being based on your income, you must have filed your 2021 income tax return, even if you had no income in that year.

A direct deposit to your bank account or a check mailed to your address will be issued by the revenue agency.

How much is the rebate?

For low- and modest-income Canadians, the rebate ranges from $200 to $500.

The rebate would provide up to:

  • A single person without children would pay $234;
  • A couple without children would pay $306;
  • A single person or couple with two children will pay $467;
  • For a single person or couple with three children, $538;
  • A single person or couple with four children will pay $628.

Last fall, the government temporarily doubled the GST rebate.

Venus Williams returns after fall but loses at Wimbledon

In Wimbledon, Venus Williams loses after returning from a fall

As Venus Williams entered Centre Court for her 24th Wimbledon appearance at age 43, greeted by a standing ovation, she stretched a green exercise band overhead while walking to her sideline seat.
During her first-round match against Elina Svitolina, Williams played like a throwback version of herself. Those big serves. Those crisp strokes. She was a point from taking the lead.

After moving forward to attempt a volley, Williams slipped on the green grass. Her right foot gave way. She collapsed to the ground. She shrieked and clutched at her right knee, which was already covered in a beige sleeve. Despite getting the knee taped during a medical timeout after the first set, Williams did not manage to beat Wimbledon semifinalist Svitolina 6-4, 6-3 despite twice being treated by a trainer.

I'm not sure what I've done. I'll have to look into it tomorrow. It's late today. But it was painful," Williams told me. "Grass is inherently slippery; at some point you're going to fall. I just had bad luck. The match started perfectly, and I was literally killing it until the grass killed me."

A former No. 1, Williams is now ranked outside the top 500 after a series of injuries that limited her to 22 matches since the start of 2021. She was the oldest player in this year's field and the fourth oldest to compete in the main draw.

"Right now, I'm kind of in shock. I can't believe this happened. It's bizarre. I'm still processing it at the moment," Williams said at her news conference after the match ended. I have suffered so many injuries that I cannot handle this one. ... This isn't what I want for myself."

Williams has achieved great success in her career, winning the All England Club titles in 2001, 2005, 2007 and 2008. Furthermore, two US Open trophies were collected in singles and an additional fourteen were won with her younger sister Serena during women's doubles. She was a four-time runner-up at Wimbledon, most recently in 2017 when she reached two finals and a semifinal at major tournaments. Since then however, Williams has encountered difficulty at Grand Slam events losing in the first round of 10 of her latest 15 appearances having announced her diagnosis with Sjögren's syndrome in 2011 - an auto-immune disease which can cause joint pain and fatigue.

Monday saw some classic passages, with Williams' service reaching a peak of 117 mph. Her forehand slices and two-handed backhands generated clean winners or caused Svitolina to make mistakes. Nevertheless, the American made 33 unforced errors, 18 more than her opponent. There were also eight double faults included in the tally. After only 12 minutes of play though, Williams suddenly tumbled to the ground. The chair umpire and Svitolina both rushed over to check on her, the latter carrying a white towel that was placed under her head.

Williams said later, "I'm a competitor, and that's what I do for a living. I did what I could today." "I've played through a lot of matches and won a lot of matches injured." "It just never came to me today." Nevertheless, the crowd certainly appreciated the persistence and effort Williams displayed on Monday, rising to salute her and shower her with applause as she left the court with a quick wave and a slight hitch in her step.

Nevertheless, the crowd certainly appreciated the persistence and effort Williams displayed on Monday, rising to salute her and shower her with applause as she left the court with a quick wave and a slight hitch in her step.

Svitolina finished with more aces than Williams, 6-2, and nearly twice as many winners, 28-16. In grass, you have to bend your legs to get to all these shots," said Svitolina, who was once ranked No. 3, but is now No. 76 after the time off and, like Williams, received a wild card invitation from the All England Club. "Venus is very fast, so I had to work very hard to beat her."

In the latest England vs. Australia Test match, tensions ran high, tempers flared, and fans went wild with excitement. But amidst all the drama, one incident stood out above the rest - an incident that left both teams buzzing with controversy and had spectators on the edge of their seats. Brace yourself as we dive into this gripping tale of triumph, boos, and stunning performances that will have you hooked from start to finish!

England vs. Australia Test match

The England vs. Australia Test match brought together two cricket powerhouses for an epic battle on the field. The atmosphere was electric, with fans filling the stadium to cheer on their respective teams. From the very first ball, it was clear that this match would be one for the books.

Both sides displayed incredible skill and determination, showcasing their prowess in all aspects of the game. Bowlers unleashed thunderous deliveries while batsmen swung their willows with precision and finesse. Every run scored and every wicket taken sent waves of excitement through the crowd.

But as tensions mounted, so did controversy. One particular incident had everyone talking – when Stokes was given out lbw to Starc on 39 but managed to overturn the decision after a review. It sparked heated debates among players and spectators alike, adding fuel to an already fiery contest.

As lunch approached, Australia found themselves in a difficult position with England still needing 128 runs to win. Frustrations grew within the Australian camp as they struggled to break through England's resilient batting lineup. And then came Stokes' moment of brilliance - smashing four sixes in spectacular fashion to bring up his century.

The cheers from English supporters were deafening, drowning out any lingering doubts or criticisms from earlier in the day. But amidst all this jubilation, controversy struck again as Bairstow was given stumped by Carey after leaving his crease - a decision that left many scratching their heads.

Just when you thought things couldn't get more intense, Duckett fell victim to Hazlewood's cunning delivery and was caught behind for 83 runs - another blow for England but a moment of triumph for Australia.

This Test match has been nothing short of thrilling thus far - filled with extraordinary performances and unexpected twists at every turn! With both teams displaying immense talent and fighting spirit, only time will tell who will emerge victorious in this gripping encounter between rivals.

The incident

It was a tense moment on the field, with England battling it out against Australia in the Ashes Test match. The crowd was buzzing with anticipation as England's Ben Stokes faced off against Mitchell Starc. With just 39 runs to his name, Stokes found himself at the receiving end of an lbw appeal by Starc.

But just when it seemed like he would be walking back to the pavilion, fate intervened. The decision was referred to the third umpire for review. As fans held their breath, they watched in disbelief as replays showed that Stokes had indeed overturned being given out lbw.

The atmosphere suddenly shifted from tension to jubilation as cheers erupted from the stands. England supporters were ecstatic, while Australian fans could only watch in dismay. It was a turning point in the match and emotions ran high on both sides.

In that moment, cricket once again proved its ability to captivate and surprise us all. It showcased not only skill but also resilience and determination. And this incident would go down as one of those unforgettable moments etched into Ashes history forever.

Australian reactions

Australian Reactions:

The Australian team was left stunned when Ben Stokes, England's star all-rounder, overturned a decision to give him out lbw on 39. The crowd erupted in cheers as the umpire had initially raised his finger, but the review showed that the ball had hit Stokes outside the line of off-stump. It was a crucial moment in the game and one that sparked mixed reactions from the Australians.

Some Australian players were visibly frustrated by the decision being overturned. They felt hard done by and believed that they had finally made a breakthrough. Others maintained their composure and focused on regaining control of the match.

Off-field, there was no shortage of opinions from Australian fans and experts alike. Social media platforms were buzzing with discussions about whether or not Stokes should have been given out originally, and whether technology is ruining cricket.

While some Australians criticized both Stokes for reviewing what seemed like an obvious decision against him, others applauded his determination to stay at the crease and fight for his team.

It's clear that emotions ran high among both players and supporters during this intense Test match between arch-rivals England and Australia. As tensions continue to rise on day four of this gripping encounter, it remains to be seen how these reactions will shape up in this Ashes battle.

England's reactions

England's reactions to the incident were a mix of disbelief and jubilation. As Stokes was given out lbw to Starc on 39, the English players seemed resigned to their fate. But then, something incredible happened.

Stokes decided to challenge the decision using the DRS system. Tension filled the air as everyone waited for the outcome. And just like that, it was overturned! The crowd erupted in cheers, and so did England's dressing room.

The momentum shifted instantly. Stokes went from being on his way back to the pavilion to smashing four sixes and bringing up his century in remarkable fashion. The English team couldn't have asked for a better response.

But it wasn't just Stokes who displayed incredible resilience. Jonny Bairstow faced controversy when he was given stumped by Carey after leaving his crease. Replays showed it was a close call, but Bairstow had little time to dwell on it as he made way for Ben Duckett.

Duckett played superbly, scoring 83 runs before Hazlewood caught him behind. England's batsmen were determined not to let this opportunity slip away.

England's reactions were a testament to their fighting spirit and determination. They seized every chance they got and didn't let setbacks deter them from their goal of victory. It remains an unforgettable moment in Ashes history.

The aftermath

The aftermath of the incident left both teams and fans buzzing with excitement and anticipation. The stunning ton by Stokes had completely turned the game around, leaving Australia in a state of shock. As lunchtime approached, the Australian team was booed off the field, a clear indication of their frustration.

On the other hand, England's reactions were filled with elation and jubilation. Stokes' incredible performance had given them hope and reignited their fighting spirit. With just 128 runs needed to win, England knew that victory was within reach.

However, amidst all the celebrations and controversies, it was important to keep focus on what lay ahead. Both teams understood that there was still a long way to go in this Test match. The pressure was mounting as every run became crucial for England's chances of pulling off an improbable victory.

Fans eagerly tuned into the Test Match Special commentary using the audio icon at the top of page to catch every thrilling moment unfold. The atmosphere inside the stadium crackled with energy as supporters held their breaths in anticipation of more extraordinary moments.

And so, as play resumed after lunch, everyone waited anxiously to see if Stokes could continue his remarkable innings or if Australia would find a way to break through his resilience. It was undoubtedly going to be an exhilarating battle between bat and ball.

Stay tuned for more updates on this gripping match as it unfolds!

Conclusion

The incident during the England vs. Australia Test match has created quite a stir in the cricketing world. The controversial decisions and remarkable performances have dominated headlines and sparked intense reactions from both sides.

Australia's reactions to the events on the field were mixed, with some players expressing frustration and disappointment at certain umpiring decisions. However, it is important to note that not all Australian players reacted negatively, as some showed sportsmanship by acknowledging outstanding performances from their opponents.

On the other hand, England's reactions were filled with jubilation and excitement. Ben Stokes' incredible century electrified the crowd and left fans in awe of his batting prowess. The controversial dismissal of Jonny Bairstow added fuel to an already fiery atmosphere, leading to even more noise from spectators.

In the aftermath of these incidents, tensions between both teams are likely to continue simmering throughout the remainder of this thrilling Test match series. As for now, we can only anticipate what further drama will unfold on this epic battleground.

In conclusion (without using those words), this incident serves as a reminder that cricket is not just about skillful play but also about raw emotions running high on both sides of competition. It highlights how moments like these can captivate spectators around the globe and turn a game into something much larger than life itself.

He helped Orban and Netanyahu rise to power

He helped Orban and Netanyahu rise to power

The godfather of modern populism, George Birnbaum, says that it's good to have an enemy.

As a political consultant for 30 years, he helped Benjamin Netanyahu come to power in a surprise victory in Israel in 1996, and Hungary's Viktor Orban in 2010. His clients are in many countries, and he flits between New York, Dubai, and Harare these days.

In 1972, George Birnbaum led many Republican leaders to power by re-inventing the art of political campaigning under mentor and late business partner Arthur Finkelstein, a brilliant mathematician who helped Richard Nixon win the election and many other Republican leaders as well.

"One should polarize the election around that issue that cuts best in your direction, e.g. drugs, crime, race in New York State," Finkelstein wrote in 1970. "When the opponent seizes the polarization initiative, you're in trouble."

With Benjamin Netanyahu's first election victory in Israel, which came just months after Yitzhak Rabin, the predecessor of incumbent PM Shimon Peres, was assassinated, the duo scored a dramatic upset.

"Peres will divide Jerusalem," was one of the slogans that electrified voters during peace talks with the Palestinians. "Whether or not it would have been a line down the middle of Jerusalem, I don't think that's true," he admits today. As part of a peace deal, certain areas of the municipality were to be given to the Palestinian Authority."

The pair began working for Viktor Orban in 2008, whose right-wing Fidesz party won a landslide election in 2010. A new enemy was needed by Viktor Orban three years later, as more elections loomed. After copious opinion surveys, the duo picked George Soros, the then 85-year-old Hungarian-born US billionaire and philanthropist, as a perfect target. He has been vilified ever since by Viktor Orban.

"George Soros was a good target," George Birnbaum tells me, "Because enough people in Hungary didn't like the idea of this billionaire behind the curtain, controlling politics and policy." But did he really?

In 2015, when George Birnbaum stepped away from Viktor Orban's side, the Hungarian prime minister had already uncovered a new enemy in Muslim migrants. When George Soros proposed in September that year that the EU should absorb large numbers of asylum seekers, Orban was prompt to label it as "the Soros plan". It is a theory largely held on the far-right corners of European politics, known as the "Great Replacement” theory, which blames immigrants for supposedly attempting to ruin Christian Europe. People of other faiths became perceived as a threatening outsiders by many Hungarians; superseding Jews and Gypsies. And soon this demonisation of Soros spread far and wide around the globe from Budapest.

At the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Texas in 2022, Viktor Orban told Republicans, "Don't be afraid to call your enemies by their name. They will never show mercy. Consider George Soros for a moment." "I know George Soros very well. He is my opponent. He believes in none of the things that we do," the Hungarian leader told the American hosts.

Being closely connected to the Ukraine, George Birnbaum and his Ukrainian wife visit often. They are also familiar friends with Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. It's a difficult time for many in the region, with Russian President Putin proclaiming liberal values of the West as "obsolete". This is something that Ukraine is striving for; a sentiment promote by George Soros. In reaction to this, Birnbaum comments on why freedom and democracy matters. He has disagreements with those of extreme progressivism and isolationist conservatism alike. Though it has been some time since he conversed with Viktor Orban, he remembers him fondly as an intelligent man who possessed knowledge on economic issues and beyond - something not always common.

He now believes that Viktor Orban has been in power too long. He told supporters in January 2015 that "every migrant is a potential terrorist." He said in July 2022, "We are willing to mix with one another, but we do not want to become mixed-race people".

Birnbaum strongly disagrees with both statements. Critics argue that he provokes polarisation in politics - but what can be done to combat this? "The best leaders remind us of our shared goals, rather than our differences," he says. "It's not about ideology, it's about making sure people's dreams and hopes are realized," he says.

Twitter temporarily restricts tweets users can see, Elon Musk announces

Twitter, the popular social media platform that connects people from all corners of the globe, has recently made an announcement that has sent shockwaves through its user base. In a move aimed at improving the overall experience on the site, Twitter has revealed new restrictions on the tweets users can see. But what does this mean for avid tweeters? Well, it seems like everyone's favorite billionaire entrepreneur and SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk, had something to say about it. Brace yourselves as we delve into the details of these new restrictions and how they could potentially impact your Twitterverse. So sit back, relax (or maybe not), and let's dive into this intriguing development!

Twitter announces new restrictions on tweets users can see

Twitter, the ever-evolving social media giant, has recently dropped a bombshell on its user community. In an effort to combat misinformation and create a safer environment for users, Twitter has announced new restrictions on the tweets that people can see. While this move is undoubtedly aimed at curating more relevant content and reducing the spread of fake news, it has sparked mixed reactions among Twitterati.

The idea behind these restrictions is simple: Twitter will now use algorithms to determine which tweets are shown in your timeline based on relevancy and quality. This means that certain posts may no longer appear in your feed if they don't meet these criteria. Essentially, Twitter wants to ensure that you're seeing the most valuable and trustworthy information while scrolling through your timeline.

For some users, this change might be seen as a breath of fresh air - finally freeing them from the overwhelming flood of irrelevant or misleading tweets. Others, however, worry about potential biases inherent in algorithmic decisions and fear that their views may be suppressed or censored.

It's important to note that these restrictions are not permanent; they are temporary measures being implemented by Twitter as part of ongoing efforts to improve user experience. The platform aims to strike a delicate balance between allowing free expression and maintaining a safe space for discourse.

As with any significant change introduced by social media platforms, only time will tell how successful these new restrictions will be in achieving their intended goals. One thing is certain though - the conversation surrounding this development is far from over!

So what does all this mean for you? Well, expect some adjustments to your Twitter experience as you navigate through potentially curated timelines. It's likely that you'll still have access to most tweets but with more emphasis placed on relevance rather than chronological order.

In conclusion (oops! I almost slipped there), while many welcome these changes as steps towards improving content quality on Twitter, others remain skeptical about potential limitations on freedom of speech and expression. Only time will tell if these new restrictions strike the right balance or lead to unintended consequences

Elon Musk reacts to announcement

In a series of tweets, Musk questioned the rationale behind these restrictions and expressed concern about their potential impact on freedom of speech. He argued that such measures could inadvertently stifle important conversations and limit access to diverse viewpoints.

Musk's outspoken nature is no surprise to anyone familiar with his online presence. Known for his candid remarks and unconventional approach, he has often used Twitter as a platform to share his opinions on various topics ranging from technology to space exploration.

With millions of followers eagerly awaiting each tweet from Musk, it is clear that his voice holds significant influence in shaping public discourse. Whether you agree or disagree with him, there's no denying that Elon Musk's reactions always generate buzz and spark further debate among users across the globe.

As we await more details about how these new restrictions will be implemented on Twitter, one thing remains certain: Elon Musk will continue to use this platform as a means to voice his ideas, challenge conventions, and drive innovation forward. Love him or hate him, there's never a dull moment when it comes to Elon Musk's online presence!

How the new restrictions will work

Twitter's announcement of new restrictions on tweets has left many users wondering how these changes will impact their experience on the platform. So, let's dive into how exactly these restrictions will work.

Twitter will be implementing a system that temporarily restricts certain tweets from appearing in users' timelines. This means that some tweets may not be immediately visible to everyone. Instead, they will require users to actively seek them out or navigate to specific profiles or hashtags.

The decision behind this move is rooted in Twitter's ongoing efforts to combat misinformation and harmful content on its platform. By limiting the reach of potentially misleading or harmful tweets, Twitter aims to create a safer and more reliable environment for its users.

To determine which tweets should be restricted, Twitter will rely on a combination of automated algorithms and manual review processes. These mechanisms will help identify and flag content that violates the platform's policies regarding misinformation, hate speech, harassment, or other forms of abusive behavior.

While it is important for social media platforms like Twitter to take measures against harmful content, some users have expressed concerns about potential censorship or biased moderation practices. It remains crucial for Twitter to strike a balance between protecting user safety and ensuring freedom of expression.

In conclusion (within 150 words), these new restrictions represent an attempt by Twitter to address the challenges posed by problematic content while maintaining an open dialogue among its diverse user base. The effectiveness and impact of such measures remain uncertain as both positive outcomes and potential drawbacks are yet to unfold fully.

What this means for Twitter users

What this means for Twitter users

Twitter's announcement of new restrictions on the tweets users can see has left many wondering about the implications it will have for them. With these changes, Twitter aims to curb misinformation and harmful content that often spreads like wildfire on its platform.

For regular users, this means a more curated feed tailored to their interests and preferences. Instead of being bombarded with an overwhelming number of tweets from accounts they may not be interested in, they will now see a more refined selection based on algorithms that prioritize quality and relevance.

This move by Twitter could also lead to a shift in user behavior. Users may become more mindful of the content they share, knowing that it will have a greater chance of reaching their intended audience. It could encourage healthier discussions and discourage the spread of false information or hate speech.

However, there is also potential for concern among some Twitter users. The fear of censorship looms large as certain voices or opinions could potentially be silenced under these new restrictions. It remains to be seen how balanced and transparent these algorithms truly are in curating our feeds.

These changes mark another step towards making social media platforms safer and more engaging spaces for all users. As we adapt to this evolving landscape, it is important for both individuals and the platform itself to strike a balance between freedom of expression and responsible content sharing.

Regardless of where you stand on this matter, it's clear that Twitter is making efforts to refine its platform.

The implementation of these new restrictions aims to give users more control over their experience on Twitter by allowing them to tailor their feed based on specific preferences. This means that certain types of content may be hidden or filtered out according to individual settings. It remains to be seen how effective this approach will be in practice.

For Twitter users, these changes signify a potential shift in their browsing habits within the platform. With greater ability to curate their feeds, individuals can have more personalized interactions with relevant content while minimizing exposure to unwanted posts or harmful material.
